What is Adjunct Couples Therapy?
Supporting Individuals in Relationship Growth
Sometimes, one partner may seek additional support either while both are in couples therapy or while their partner is seeing a therapist. Adjunct Couples Therapy is a unique service designed for individuals who are either seeing a couples therapist themselves or whose partner is in therapy. As an adjunct therapist, I collaborate with your primary couples therapist (with your consent) to support you individually while respecting the work you and your partner are doing together.
Why Seek Adjunct Couples Therapy?
You may find yourself in a situation where, although your relationship is being addressed in couples therapy, you need additional support for your own personal growth. Sometimes, navigating the emotional complexities of a relationship requires working on your own mental health and well-being in tandem with the couple's process.
Whether you're looking to:
-
Improve communication in your relationship
-
Address personal emotional challenges that affect your relationship dynamics
-
Process past experiences or trauma that are impacting your connection with your partner
-
Gain clarity on your role in relationship patterns
Adjunct couples therapy can be a powerful addition to your journey. This approach helps you focus on your individual needs while supporting the overall goals of your relationship.
Why is Adjunct Couples Therapy Beneficial?
-
Focus on Personal Growth: Even in a relationship, it's important to prioritize your mental and emotional well-being. Adjunct therapy helps you understand yourself better, which can directly benefit your relationship.
-
Clearer Communication: Often, unresolved individual issues can lead to miscommunication in relationships. Working on these issues in adjunct therapy can improve your ability to communicate with your partner, strengthening your relationship.
Personal Growth: Addressing personal challenges such as anxiety, depression, grief, or past trauma can help you feel more grounded and secure in your relationship, making it easier to navigate challenges as a couple.
How Adjunct Couples Therapy Works
Unlike traditional couples therapy where both partners attend sessions together, adjunct therapy focuses solely on the individual. This allows for a safe, nonjudgmental space where you can explore your emotions, beliefs, and behaviors.
Here's how we will approach your therapy:
-
Personalized Support: We work on your individual needs, whether you’re dealing with emotional challenges, self-esteem issues, or relationship dynamics that require attention outside of the couple's therapy setting.
-
Collaboration with Your Couples Therapist: If you're already working with a couples therapist, I can collaborate with them (with your permission) to ensure that the work we do is aligned and enhances the therapeutic process. This ensures that our sessions complement the progress being made in couples therapy.
Cultural Sensitivity and Trauma-Informed Care: I take a culturally responsive approach that honors your background and experiences. Whether you're dealing with anxiety, trauma, or life transitions, I offer an inclusive, trauma-informed space for you to explore your feelings.
What to Expect in Adjunct Couples Therapy
